The Gestalt Prayer

The Gestalt Prayer

I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
And you are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful.
If not, it can’t be helped.
(Fritz Perls, 1969)

Hi Billal, it’s a lovely prayer by Fritz Perls and it also poses a problem for Gestaltists because Gestalt is relational and asserts that we don’t live isolation, only in relation to other people. In fact, according to Gestalt, we can only experience ourselves in relation to our environment.

Yet, the message of responsibility for our own actions is clear.

    Thanks for that.

    Gilead, a devout Gestaltist
